The 2006 Ford PAS Networking Conference Student Track

Twelve Ford PAS students and three mentors from six states (Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Texas) attended the 4th Annual Ford PAS National Networking Conference, June 20–23, 2006, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Students participated in engaging learning experiences throughout the conference that exemplified the active, hands-on teaching and learning approach of the Ford PAS program. This year’s student track participants wrote articles that will be featured on the Ford PAS Web site throughout the 2006–2007 academic year. Be sure to visit the Student Center again to read these great articles!
During the conference, students had multiple opportunities to develop their communications and media skills. They met Shawne Duperon, an author and media trainer, who spoke to them about crafting stories for print. They also learned how to take and select photographs to illustrate their stories. In addition, students toured the Arizona State University’s campus and visited the offices of Web Devil, the university’s student-run online magazine, to learn firsthand how feature stories are crafted for online publication. Students then applied their new knowledge to the creation of their own feature stories at the Ford PAS Conference. In addition to the student track activities, students had opportunities to participate in other conference events and attended sessions, along with Ford PAS educators, administrators, national/regional partners, and business partners. A highlight of the conference was the Spotlight on the Ford PAS Themes sessions, focusing on the following themes: 21st Century Skills, Business and Entrepreneurship, and Science and Engineering. At these sessions, students presented their own Ford PAS student work and had the opportunity to interact with other conference participants.
